2020 was a year a lot of us would like to forget. Unfortunately, covid is still rearing its ugly head these days.
Right now, the world's chocolate supply is being wiped out by a "covid-like pandemic" sweeping through West Africa's cacao trees.
Apparently, a lot of trees are coming down with the "cacao swollen shoot virus disease," or CSSVD for short, which is transported by mealybugs that feed on the trees.
Once infected, these trees experience swelling of the stems and roots, red veins on immature leaves, and its cacao pods shrinking. Of course, cacao pods are how the world gets chocolate.
To combat this virus, researchers have begun administering trees with vaccines! Depending on which side of the branch these trees fall on, they might not want the vaccine at all.
An expert told the NY Post that the world is already experiencing supply chain issues with chocolate, and this virus potentially wiping out 15% to 20% of harvests will not help.
The expert advises to stock up on chocolate "while you can!"
