Backstage at the 2024 GRAMMY Awards with Lainey Wilson, Billie Eilish, and more

Jack Antonoff was clearly still reeling off his win for Producer of the Year when we caught him backstage. “You got a whole industry being like, ‘You got to do everything, you got to do everything’ and then one day, it’s like, POOF!” he chuckled. But it’s not all peachy-keen from here on out, as Antonoff explained that there’s still significant work to be done in the industry as a whole. “As an artist, you can’t get used to being paid less… which they try to get you used to” he said, mentioning past ticketing controversies.

If you weren’t expecting Lainey Wilson to sing “I’m Just Ken” with Mark Ronson, then you were just as surprised as Lainey herself. When asked about the performance at Clive Davis’ annual pre-GRAMMY gala, the Best Country Album winner said she loved performing the song. “I mean, when Clive Davis invites you to a party, of course you’re gonna say yes. And then when you find out it’s with Mark Ronson, you’re definitely gonna say yes!” she said with a smile and her classic Louisiana twang.

While siblings and co-writing duo Billie Eilish and FINNEAS are no strangers to the GRAMMYs, their wins for the Barbie single “What Was I Made For?” were especially validating. “I feel very seen, I feel very heard and I did not expect that from this song,” Eilish explained. “The way people reacted when it came out, I was completely blown away by the way I felt understood. And this [award] goes even farther than that.” In total, the duo took home the GRAMMY for Best Song Written For Visual Media and the coveted Song of the Year, leaving Eilish’s personal total at 9 wins and 25 nominations.

Musicians Julien Baker, Phoebe Bridgers, and Lucy Dacus are seemingly closing out their time as the supergroup boygenius following their three GRAMMY wins. “We told each other at the beginning of this project that it would have a finite date, a finite amount of time devoted to it,” Bridgers explained, “and we’ve completed that time, and now we walk into the sunset.” Baker, having been emotional throughout the night, added, “We put the record into the world, and that’s enough.” Taking home the Best Rock Song, Best Rock Performance and the Best Alternative Album awards is enough indeed!
