A 'Chucky' TV Show Is Coming: Here's What to Know (and Be Scared Of)

Chucky really is our friend to the end.

The “Child’s Play” franchise has reared its head every few years since the first film was released in 1988.

Now, everyone’s favorite gruffy-voiced serial killer doll is coming back. In 2020, we’ll all have a few years added to our faces when Chucky returns in an eponymous show that is highly anticipated but still early in the works.

We know you’re eager to watch even though you’re still dealing with the psychological effects of the first few movies. To get in the spirit of Halloween, and Chucky, the Notorious Killer Doll Day, which is today, this is everything you need to know about the “Chucky” TV series reboot.

Chucky is front and center

The show will be about the character at the center of the "Child's Play" films. Chucky is a red-haired, freckly doll inhabited by the spirit of serial killer Charles Lee Ray. Ray enters the doll's body during a voodoo session to avoid going to hell in the first film.

We'll have an opportunity to spend even more time with the little guy. #ChildsPlay #Chucky

Syfy snagged the rights

Syfy picked up the rights to develop a "Chucky" TV show. The series will be the next step in a larger push by the network to expand beyond its sci-fi programming to include horror.

The original franchise creator will be involved

Don Manicini, who created and wrote the original movie franchise, has been confirmed for the TV show. Mancini teased the project as early as June 2018 in this tweet.

"I’ve long wanted to bring Chucky to television and Syfy is the perfect network for us," Mancini commented earlier this year. "The show will be a fresh take on the franchise, allowing us to explore Chucky’s character with a depth that is uniquely afforded by the television series format, while staying true to the original vision that has terrorized audiences for over three decades now."

Chucky will be scary again

Executive producer Nick Antosca said the show "will be closer to the tone of the first two movies in the series," signaling a return to the straightforward horror tone of "Child's Play I & II" as opposed to the horror-comedy hybrid of the later films.

Discussing the project, Antosca said, "Syfy is the perfect place to tell the next chapter in the Chucky saga and having the original creative team lead the project will help elevate the story we are excited to tell."

The original voice of Chucky will return

Brad Dourif, who voiced Chucky in the franchise films, is slated to return for the TV series. Antosca said that the show will offer "a whole new story" while still appealing to old and new fans alike. For acolytes of the original slashers, Dourif reprising his role will be a huge selling point.

The 2019 film is unconnected

The Syfy series won't be connected to "Child's Play" film that was released earlier this year, produced by a different creative team than the original film series. The 2019 film starred Mark Hamill as the voice of Chucky.
