Seventeen contact lenses were found in the eye of a woman who was about to have cataract surgery, reports Optometry Today.
The 67-year-old woman had no idea where those contact lenses had gone, and thought she just had dry eyes.
Ophthalmologist Rupal Marjaria said that they also found an additional 10 contact lenses in the patient’s eyes.
Marjaria said that she had never seen anything like this before.
“None of us have ever seen this before. It was such a large mass. All the 17 contact lenses were stuck together. We were really surprised that the patient didn’t notice it because it would cause quite a lot of irritation while it was sitting there,” Morjaria said.
The patient wore disposable contact lenses for 35 years, and didn’t visit the ophthalmologist often.
“She was quite shocked. When she was seen two weeks after I removed the lenses she said her eyes felt a lot more comfortable. She thought her previous discomfort was just part of old age and dry eye,” Ms Morjaria added.
