County Square Uncertain

In two weeks, the Greenville County Council will review a proposal to give up on the $1 billion plans to redevelop County Square.

A planned government building at the corner of University Ridge and Church Street would be a multi-story, 250,000 square foot complex that is a part of the proposed redevelopment of more than 37 acres of public land near downtown.

But now the county council is split as to whether or not they want to see the project come to fruition.

With questions about cost and transparency still unanswered, six of the council’s twelve member have expressed their opposition to the project.

They include Councilman Mike Barnes, who said he turned against the project as cost projections continued to rise, going up to potentially $16 million more than originally presented, and that opposition only increased after he learned more about how the county indeed to borrow money to pay for the $70 million office building.

The proposal will be up again at that planned meeting in two weeks.
