The Department of Juvenile Justice plans to detain kids closer to their homes by opening two new centers in the Lowcountry and the Upstate. The department will transform current temporary facilities in Union and Ridgeville into long-term centers where kids will serve their sentences near their communities.
Department Senior Strategist Monique McDaniels said placing the kids closer to their homes will help them transition better when they're released.
Currently the DJJ detains all offenders at its facility in Columbia. The average capacity there at one time is 120 kids. The new centers are expected to open in 2020. I’m Evan Smith 1063 WORD dot com news.
