The Greenville County Sheriff's Office today released the body camera footage of deputy-involved shooting from July.
Information in the video stated the shooting happened on Long Forest Drive in Greenville on July 11 around 5 PM.
Deputies were conducting surveillance in unmarked vehicle, looking for a suspect who had multiple active warrants for his arrest.
The warrants against 26-year-old Michael Joseph Culbertson stemmed from incidents on June 27 and July 10.
The warrants were for resisting arrest, failure to stop for blue lights, interfering with police, and reckless driving.
On July 10th, deputies were called to a residence on Blake Street where Culbertson was reportedly causing a disturbance.
His family later told deputies that he stated he was not going to jail; they also said he was recently in possession of a firearm.
Deputies unable to find Culbertson that night.
When they continued their investigation the next day, they learned he was in the area of Long Forest Drive.
According to the video, at 5:06 PM deputies saw Culbertson coming out of the woodline on Long Forest Drive.
Two uniformed deputies exited their unmarked van followed by five special team deputies.
While exiting the van, a deputy yelled "Let me see your f***ing hands right now" and Culbertson began to run away from the deputies.
According to the video, deputies reportedly saw Culbertson holding a cell phone in his left hand and reach for a gun with his right hand.
They then shot Culbertson; he was hit with multiple bullets.
Once Culbertson was on the ground, they put handcuffs on him and began CPR and first aid.
Culbertson's gun and magazine are visible in the road in the body camera footage; they were later taken for evidence.
EMS took Culbertson to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.
SLED was called to the scene to investigate and an internal review was lead by the Office of Professional Standards.
Investigation found five out of seven deputies shot their guns at the suspect; the other two did not fire their weapons.
The internal investigation concluded on July 30th and decided the officers took necessary force which lead to the death of Culbertson.
The video is available here; as the authorities say repeatedly in the video, it is graphic.
