Driver impairment results in passenger death.

On August 15th, 4 occupants of a Crown Victoria were transported to the hospital after the driver lost control trying to make a turn off of Laurens Road shortly after 10pm. 

The car slammed into the Frugal Backpacker store.  A rear seat passenger, who was critically injured, died shortly after their arrival at the hospital.  

The Greenville Police Department's Collision Reconstruction Team determined the driver, Clinton A. Nelson of Greenville, was driving under the influence of alcohol which contributed to the passengers death.

Nelson is charged with one count of Felony DUI with great bodily injury and one count of Felony DUI resulting in death.  He is incarcerated in the Greenville County Detention Center awaiting a bond hearing.

The investigation into the collision continues.  At this time, the Greenville Police Dept. says "there is no known evidence" that another vehicle was involved in this crash.

On August 15, 2020, at approximately 10:06 pm, officers with the Greenville Police Department responded to 1419 Laurens Road in response to a vehicle collision with injuries.

A single-vehicle (Blue Ford Crown Victoria) with four occupants left the roadway from Laurens Road and entered the parking lot at 1419 Laurens Road, striking the side of the Frugal Backpacker outdoor sports store. All four occupants were transported to Greenville Memorial Hospital by Greenville County Emergency Medical Services.

The rear seat passenger had severe life-threatening injuries and was pronounced deceased shortly after arrival at the hospital.

Due to the severity of the collision, the Greenville Police Department’s Collision Reconstruction Team responded to the collision scene.

Through the early stages of the investigation, it was determined that the driver, Clinton A. Nelson, of Greenville, was operating the vehicle while impaired, and as a result, caused great bodily injury to one occupant and the death of another occupant.

As a result, Clinton Nelson was charged with one count of Felony Driving Under the Influence with Great Bodily Injury and one count of Felony Driving Under the Influence resulting in Death.

He is currently incarcerated in the Greenville County Detention Center, awaiting a Bond Hearing. At the time of this release, there is no known evidence which would suggest another vehicle was involved in this collision.
