Commissioners approve financial support to Good Neighbor Program

CPW and SSSD add funds to Spartanburg Water’s Customer Assistance Program

SPARTANBURG – Though service disconnections for past due balances resumed on July 14, funds approved by the Commission of Public Works of the City of Spartanburg and the Sanitary Sewer District at their recent June 23 meetings will help ensure support for customers in need of assistance.

Each Commission authorized a donation of $7,500 – for a total of $15,000 that has been paid to the Good Neighbor Program.

Spartanburg Water implemented the Good Neighbor Program in 1992 to assist residential customers who are experiencing financial hardship.  The Salvation Army administers this program to include the distribution of funds, maintains eligibility criteria, and handles casework.  Funds can be used to pay water and sewer bills and fees, including non-payment service charges, and new account fees.

As part of this program, Spartanburg Water offers customers the opportunity to “round-up” their utility bills to the next dollar – with the additional funds from this Operation Round-Up initiative going into the Good Neighbor Program. Customers can also make a one-time donation or choose a reoccurring contribution amount with each bill cycle.

“Our customers are very generous in their contributions to the Good Neighbor Program,” said Sue Schneider, Chief Executive Officer. “With this additional financial support from our Commissions, the Salvation Army can meet the needs of many more individuals during these unprecedented times.”

The Spartanburg Water Customer Assistance Program also offers payment arrangements and referrals to other community charitable organizations.

For customers interested in learning more about the Customer Assistance Program options, the Spartanburg Water Customer Service team is available Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. to provide support by phone – (864) 582-6375.
