Released by the Greenwood Police Department.

This afternoon shortly before 5 pm, officers responded to a call of a child being shot.
Officers found a 4 year old child who was struck by gunfire.
The child has been airlifted to Greenville for treatment.
We are working to get a status on the child at this time.
At this point in the investigation, it is believed that the child climbed up and retrieved the firearm from its storage place.
While looking at the gun, the child accidentally discharged the weapon, striking them.
If you have firearms in your home, please make sure that they are locked up or unloaded.
We're often tempted to think "It's on the highest shelf - they can't reach it", but they find ways to get to them.
It's also a good idea to sit down with your children and discuss gun safety.
Please join us in sending thoughts and prayers up for this young child's recovery.
