At a press conference Wednesday afternoon, State Epidemiologist Dr. Linda Bell said that COVID numbers have been much higher than desired lately, especially in Greenville.
Greenville was recently labeled a coronavirus hotspot in the state, and State Epidemiologist Dr. Linda Bell said that much of this likely comes from the virus spreading within households.
But Greenville isn’t the only part of the state seeing undesirable COVID numbers.
"I have to say that today I am more concerned about COVID-19 in South Carolina than I have ever been before," said Dr. Bell. "For the past two weeks, we've seen some of our highest daily numbers since the pandemic began."
She continued to explain that the percentage of positive COVID tests across the state has been unexpectedly high.
Both Dr. Bell and Governor McMaster urged South Carolinians to adhere to social distancing and other CDC recommendations to protect themselves and those around them in the absence of a vaccine.
"It's just a question of being respectful of your fellow citizens," said Governor McMaster. "And that is the only way that we will stop this virus, short of a vaccine."
Governor McMaster also announced another extension of the South Carolina State of Emergency order by another fifteen days.
