McMaster Faces Prayer Controversy

Cover Image

Governor McMaster has a habit of praying – specifically, offering up prayers during press conferences when dangerous storms are on the horizon.

Most recently, as McMaster addressed warnings and preparations in the lead up to Hurricane Dorian, an army captain was present who led those gathered in prayer asking for help in keeping people safe.

Now a group called The Freedom From Religion Foundation is accusing McMaster of violating the US Constitution by making these prayers at official government events.

Among other complaints, the group cited the Hurricane Dorian press conference in particular and the Army captain in attendance who ended a prayer with the words “in the name of Christ, amen.”

The group says Governor McMaster is on notice, and that it hopes to “solve these issues through education” but added that if the trend continues, other options will be on the table.

In response, McMaster issued a statement saying “for every person who may get offended, countless South Carolinians likely gain strength, guidance, and comfort from these prayers.”
