Governor Henry McMaster has lifted a few orders, allowing for some stores to reopen and mayors to choose if they will reopen beaches in their cities.

Social distancing is still required.

Effective at 12 PM on April 21st, beaches may open if their local government approves their opening.

Various stores may reopen at 5 PM today, including:

  • Furniture and home-furnishings stores
  • Clothing, shoe, and clothing-accessory stores
  • Jewelry, luggage, and leather goods stores
  • Department stores, with the exception of hardware and home-improvement stores
  • Sporting goods stores
  • Book, craft, and music stores
  • Flea markets
  • Florists and flower stores

McMaster said stores still must adhere to the order stating the amount of people allowed in stores must be 20% of occupancy or five customers per 1000 square feet, whichever is less.

Additionally, law enforcement is still allowed to dispel groups of three or more, including at beaches.

Gov. McMaster said because South Carolinians have showed compliance and common sense these steps can reasonably be taken safely.

He also said they want to ensure the state's economic health is as strong as public health.

South Carolina authorities have yet to make a decision about the return to school; McMaster said discussions with Superintendent Molly Spearman will continue.

McMaster also announced the launch of accelerateSC, which was created to revitalize the state's economy; it will be directed by James Burns, a partner of the law firm of Nelson, Mullins, Riley, and Scarborough. More details about accelerateSC will be released later in the week.

A press release reminded that all other executive orders, including the Governor’s “Home or Work” order, remain in effect.
