Press Release from Meals on Wheels on May 7th

Greenville, South Carolina (May 7, 2020) – Meals on Wheels of Greenville has partnered with Senior Resources and BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina to provide emergency food assistance to seniors in Greenville County in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. Distributed meals are intended to help combat food insecurity as part of the Emergency Senior Nutrition Program and is a five-week initiative.
“Meals on Wheels’ partnership with these two wonderful organizations will help provide seniors in our community access to nutritious meals, which is so important – especially during this pandemic,” said Catriona Carlisle, Executive Director of Meals on Wheels of Greenville. “Since the outbreak began, we’ve continued to serve our Meals on Wheels clients by implementing significant health and safety protocols. It’s an honor to be able to expand services outside of this and help even more seniors in need.”
The Emergency Senior Nutrition Program is able to expand the services of their COVID-19 Disaster Relief Fund due to the generous donation of nearly $1.6 million from BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina and the BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina Foundation.
Beginning the week of May 4, Meals on Wheels of Greenville will be helping to distribute meals at three sites throughout the week: Tuesdays at Beech Springs Church (125 Cooley Bridge Road, Pelzer, SC 29669), Thursdays at Center for Community Services (1102 Howard Drive, Simpsonville, SC 29681), and Saturdays at Berea Friendship United Methodist Church (8001 White Horse Road, Greenville, SC 29617). Each site will be open from 10:30am – 12:00pm on a first come, first serve basis.
There are specific requirements that must be met to receive free meal services from the Emergency Senior Nutrition Program. To receive the meal pack, you must be a senior citizen (60+) or a caregiver taking a meal to a senior citizen, and you must reside in Greenville County. All meal recipients must show a state issued ID and provide a name, address, and phone number at pick-up. If you are picking up a meal for a senior resident, please have their ID with you. Only two meal packs are allowed per car (10 individual meals). Individuals are permitted one pick-up per week.
Senior citizens are at the forefront of the COVID-19 crisis, and the partnership between Meals on Wheels of Greenville, Senior Resources, and BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina allows us to continue to provide and expand the services they rely on.
