On Monday evening, the Greenville City Council unanimously approved an emergency ordinance requiring individuals to wear face masks in grocery stores and pharmacies.
The ordinance went into effect on June 23rd and says anyone who fails to wear a mask in grocery stores or pharmacies will be be fined $25.
However, according to the council, the businesses themselves do not need to enforce the ordinance although they are responsible for making the requirement known to the public.
The public expressed mixed reactions to the ordinance.
One lady shopping at a local grocery store reported she is in favor of the ordinance, saying she feels safer with everyone wearing a mask.
Other shoppers at local pharmacies echoed her sentiments and added that they believe the city only has best intentions in mind.
One woman hopes other cities will follow suit.
Some Greenville residents say they don't see the point in the ordinance.
Others suggest those who are frightened of coronavirus should stay home while those who aren't afraid roam without masks.
Regardless of a pro-or-con belief, a resounding sentiment was confusion.
The ordinance technically only applies to the city of Greenville, but many do not know where the city lines fall.
The ordinance can be terminated by the passing of another ordinance.
Otherwise, it will remain in effect for 60 days.
