Cherokee County Coroner Dennis Fowler says a Gaffney man perished in a house fire Saturday afternoon. Fowler identified the victim as Blake Lee Spencer, 30, of 102 Adams Street, Gaffney.
“City of Gaffney firefighters were dispatched to a residential fire at 712 4th Street at 6:26 p.m. Upon arrival a woman who was living at the location told authorities Spencer was trapped in a bedroom. Once the fire was extinguished, firefighters located Spencer’s body near the bedroom door on the floor. He was pronounced dead at the scene,” Fowler said.
“Spencer was visiting the female and had just lit a wood stove when she smelled smoke. When she opened the door to the bedroom where Spencer was flames shot out the door pushing her out. She managed to escape, however Spencer, who is handicapped and is confined to a wheelchair was entrapped.”
Fowler said an autopsy has been ordered to assist with his investigation of the fatal fire which is continuing.
