The Office of the South Carolina State Senate Majority issued the following press release Thursday. COLUMBIA, SC — The South Carolina education funding formula may see proposed changes under the formation of a new Senate Education Funding Reform Study Committee. The committee, appointed by Senate Education Committee Chairman Greg Hembree, will review the mechanics and methodology of the state’s education funding formula to determine what revisions and refinements are necessary to provide increased flexibility needed at the district level, while meeting the state’s objectives. “We have long heard talk about the challenges with the state’s education funding formula and how to improve it given the wide-reaching changes in our state both geographically, demographically and the critical economic needs. Time has come to stop the talk and take action,” Senator Greg Hembree says. “This committee will have a tough challenge ahead of them, but I have confidence that they will be diligent in their work and provide recommendations to the full Senate Education Committee for a simplified, reliable formula for years to come.” The Committee will be chaired by Senator Ross Turner, R-Greenville, and will be additionally comprised of the following members: Senate Majority Leader Shane Massey, R-Edgefield; Senate Minority Leader Nikki Setzler, D-Lexington; Senators Tom Young, R-Aiken; Rex Rice, R-Pickens; Vincent Sheheen, D-Kershaw; and Gerald Malloy, D-Darlington. The first meeting of the Senate Education Funding Reform Study Committee will be held on October 23, 2019.
