The Oconee County Coroner's Office issued the following press release Saturday.
A 76 year-old Walhalla woman died Saturday afternoon from injuries sustained in a two vehicle collision. She was a restrained front seat passenger in a vehicle that was struck by a second vehicle at an intersection.
This collision occurred at the intersection of West South Broad Street and South Cedar Street within the City of Walhalla; this collision was reported at 2:30 pm.
The Walhalla Police and the SC Highway Patrol are investigating this collision. Coroner Karl Addis identified the deceased as, Lois Faye Winkler, 76, of Walhalla; Ms. Winkler diedat the scene from blunt force traumatic injuries.
Walhalla police say that a man has been charged after the Saturday afternoon collision that killed Winkler. 29-year-old Robert Alan Pelfry, the driver of the vehicle that hit the vehicle in which Winkler was a passenger, was transported to Oconee Memorial Hospital for his injuries. After Pelfry's discharge from the hospital, he was taken to the Oconee County Detention Center.
Pelfry was charged with felony DUI resulting in death, driving under suspension for DUI, and broken seal liquor.
