“What are we doing?”

That was the question President Joe Biden had for Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and Texas Governor Greg Abbott as the Delta variant of the coronavirus spreads rapidly through their respective states as they and their fellow state lawmakers undercut restrictions designed to slow the spread.

“If you’re not going to help, at least get out of the way of people trying to do the right thing," Biden said.

"Florida and Texas account for one third of all new Covid-19 cases in the entire country. Just two states. Look, we need leadership from everyone. If some governors aren't willing to do the right thing to beat this pandemic, they should allow businesses and universities who want to do the right thing to be able to do it," Biden continued.

"I say to these governors: please help. If you aren't going to help, please get out of the way of the people who are trying to do the right thing. Use your power to save lives," Biden added.

The President made a point to single out a Texas law that prohibits professors at state universities and community colleges from asking unvaccinated students to put a mask on and called out states that have banned mask mandates.

Biden lamented the latest surge that is spreading quickly through the unvaccinated citizens of the country, saying “it's heartbreaking particularly because it's preventable."

About 70% of all American adults have gotten at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccinations, according to a White House statement released Monday. It was a mark the country hit about a month later than the Biden administration had hoped, having originally targeted a July 4th deadline.
