The 100-year-old British World War II veteran who raised over $50 million for health care workers in the United Kingdom during the pandemic last year has now been hospitalized with COVID-19.
Capt. Sir Thomas Moore's daughter Hannah posted a statement on his Twitter page Sunday saying her father has recently been under treatment for pneumonia and tested positive for the coronavirus last week.
"He was at home with us until today when he needed additional help breathing,” Hannah Moore said. “He is being treated in a ward, although he is not in ICU.”
Moore began a fundraiser last April to thank the health care workers who treated him for cancer. His original goal was to raise $1,370 by using his walker to walk 100 laps in his garden in Buckinghamshire, England while under lockdown.
Moore eventually raised $50.7 million. Queen Elizabeth marked his service to the nation and charity work by bestowing a knighthood on him, promoting him to honoring colonel and holding a special flyover in his honor.
"We understand that everyone will be wishing him well,’ continued Hannah Moore. “We are of course focusing on my father and will update you when we are able to.”
