Elon Musk apparently became one of the latest public figures to express support for pop star Britney Spears, who told a judge last month that she wants to end her father's rule over her longstanding conservatorship.
Spears – a 39-year-old entertainer who has been performing since she was a minor and has since become a household name – has been under a conservatorship for the past 13 years. This legal arrangement allows a person’s personal, economic, and legal decision-making power to be ceded to others, explained the New Yorker in a recent in-depth report.
According to the report, Spears was placed under the conservatorship of her father, Jamie Spears, following a series of complicated incidents stemming from her divorce from ex-husband Kevin Federline. While it has been in place, she has released albums, headlined a worldwide tour and made tens of millions of dollars.
Since at least 2009, Spears’ fans have been skeptical of the conservatorship.
They have created websites, talked on podcasts and posted on social media with the #FreeBritney hashtag to voice their concerns.
Last month, Spears herself declared that she wanted the conservatorship to end. A judge denied Spears’ request to have her father removed from financial aspects of the conservatorship, but allowed Bessemer Trust, a wealth management firm, to remove itself as a planned co-conservator.
Musk, a multi-billionaire known for travel-based innovation at Tesla and SpaceX and the current partner of Canadian musician Grimes, is not the only public figure who has joined the #FreeBritney cause. Her former Mickey Mouse Club co-star Christina Aguilera, Cher, Paris Hilton, Miley Cyrus, Spears’ former boyfriend Justin Timberlake and others have offered their support.
Additionally, Senator Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts has called for more federal oversight of the country’s guardianship system following Spears’ recent testimony.
