(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A pre-pandemic style 4th of July weekend could be hard on pets, especially dogs or cats that were adopted during the pandemic and aren't used to family parties or cookouts.
Dr. David Gonsky of West Loop Veterinary Care in Chicago said some breeds of dog are social and love being around new people, while other types of dogs or cats may have a hard time around new people.
He suggests pet owners slowly ease them into crowds.
"When you're doing an introduction, maybe your first couple of guests, go slow,” he said. “Maybe have them give a treat upon the introduction, and let the dog or cat be the guide of how much they want to be involved in the gathering.”
Fireworks are a common source of anxiety for pets. If the drumbeat of backyard fireworks shows proves to be too relentless, Dr. Gonsly suggested placing your dog in a soothing environment.
"Try to keep them in a quiet, calm, and darkened area. Sometimes a small room works great if they like it. Play soft music, or a fan, or turn the TV on for some ambient music.”
He added pet owners can try over-the-counter anxiety remedies like pheromones or “thunder shirts.” If that doesn't work, he suggests calling your vet for prescription anti-anxiety medication.
