
A man who came to the U.S. as an immigrant and became a beloved figure as a restaurant owner and councilman in an Upstate town died over the weekend.

Yousef Mefleh was a known and beloved figure in the Oconee County town of Westminster. He immigrated to the U.S. from Saudi Arabia and became a naturalized citizen. In the 1980's, he opened a restaurant in Westminster, Youse'f Kitchen which would become an Oconee County institution.
Later, he served on the Westminster City Council. Yousef died at his home Saturday from what Oconee County Coroner Karl Addis, described as a cardiac related episode. After news of his passing spread over the weekend, many Oconee area residents took social media to honor the man for the impact he made during his decades in the community.
