Bob Jones University announced via social media, after nearly two years of work, the BJU engineering team is one of just 16 finalists remaining in NASA's LunaRecycle Challenge.
The competition, which launched in September 2024, challenges teams to develop recycling solutions that reduce non-metabolic waste and improve the sustainability of long-term lunar missions.

Led by Dr. Lovegrove, the BJU team developed the "Moon Brick," an innovative process that earned the team a spot in Phase 2 of the competition.

In August, 2026, Lovegrove and students Jonas Barker and Micah Shelton will demonstrate their Moon Brick process before a panel of NASA judges as they compete for a share of the challenge's $2 million prize pool.
