The son of a now convicted murderer is refuting allegations of his own involvement in a death, nearly 8 years ago. Buster Murdaugh has been linked to the 2015 death of classmate Stephen Smith. Murdaugh issued a statement Monday morning calling the allegations "baseless and vicious rumors".
Suspicion of Murdaugh's involvement has long been there, but that gained recent momentum when Smith's death was highlighted in the Murdaugh Murders, NetFlix Special.
Smith's death was originally ruled as a possible hit and run, however some officials have refuted the original findings. Smith's family recently started a GoFundMe campaign to pay for his body to be exhumed, as part of an independent autopsy.
Buster Murdaugh said in his statement " I unequivocally deny any involvement in his death, and my heart goes out to the Smith family. I am requesting that the media immediately stop publishing these defamatory comments and rumors about me.”
