It's a resounding answer of "Flock No" to mass surveillance cameras in one Upstate county. The Oconee County Council met Tuesday night and voted to pass a third and final reading of an ordinance that prohibits Flock Cameras.
The ordinance prohibits the county from using tax dollars, equipment and resources to support the mass surveillance systems. The Sheriff's Office there is in favor of flock cameras and cited their usefulness in at least one major case that was quickly resolved. Council Chair Matt Durham had spearheaded the anti-Flock movement calling the cameras a violation of the constitution.
Only one member of the Oconee County Council had stood in opposition to the proposal and that was Councilman John Elliott who represents District 1 which is Northern Oconee County. With the ordinance passing the Sheriff's Office is banned from using the Flock system.
Sheriff Mike Crenshaw has cited the system's usefulness but says his office will comply with the council's decision.
