A Florida man with ties to the Upstate has been indicted for allegedly running a multi-million dollar Medicare scheme. The U.S Department of Justice says a grand jury returned a five count indictment against 62 year old, Mark Weinberger.
He had been prohibited from being associated with Medicare after a previous conviction. Prosecutors say Weinberger owned a medical equipment company that fraudulently became enrolled with Medicare. He used a call center in Greenville as a hub for orders for orthotic braces and submitted claims to Medicare for them.
Weinberger also is accused of falsifying documents to conceal his ownership due to enroll in Medicare. He also allegedly created fake doctors' orders for the equipment.
The DOJ says Weinberger and his co-conspirators generated over 6 million dollars in false claims and Medicare paid out over 3 million on those claims.
Weinberger faces over 30 years in prison if convicted. He's set to appear in court next week.
