The Greenville County School District is working on a proposal to add systems that would detect weapons to its schools. The District says it has been working on the plan to add those systems for about a year. However, the issue seems to have become more prevalent following an incident earlier this year. In late March, 12 year old student Jamari Jackson was shot and killed at Greenville's Tanglewood Middle School.

The particular detectors the district wants to implement are a portable weapons scan system called Evolv. The new systems have been brought up as part of the District's budget proposal for the coming academic year. School Superintendent Dr. Burke Royster says the district would need to allocate $700,000, which would also help pay for a technician and Sheriff's Deputy assigned to the system.

The School Board would have to approve the funding. If approved the District says the system could be implemented in its schools by the first day of school in August.
