Tuesday Afternoon Update:
Sheriff Hobart Lewis at a press conference Tuesday evening confirmed that one deputy died following a major accident on I-85. Two other deputies and two suspects were also injured and are still in the hospital.
The deputy fatality was announced to be Sgt. Conley Jumper, who Lewis said was a prime example of a public servant and had been with law enforcement for almost 30 years.

“Everybody loved Jumper,” Sheriff Lewis said. “He was a man of integrity and passion.”
The incident occurred at about 3:00 p.m. Tuesday afternoon on I-85 near White Horse Road. Sheriff Lewis said the exact series of events is unknown, as the investigation is still in its infancy.

However, it is known that it began at a traffic stop when one of the suspects in a car got into a physical altercation with two deputies.
Lewis said that, during the confrontation, the suspects' vehicle accelerated into a tractor trailer.
At some point after this, Lewis said, another deputy's patrol car also struck the suspect's vehicle, injuring them as well.
He also confirmed that Sgt. Jumper, two other deputies, and two suspects were injured in the accident and transported to the hospital, and that Sgt. Jumper later passed away at the hospital.
Sheriff Lewis said the investigation is still ongoing and only in its infancy. More details as they become available.
