The Greenville County Sheriff's Office rejects complaints by attorneys suing the Rockstar Cheer organization that law enforcement failed to respond to persistent reports of sexual abuse.
Strom Law Firm has amended the federal lawsuit filed two weeks ago to include more victims and targets half a dozen more coaches as defendants. A statement accompanying the expanded lawsuit describes cases of young athletes transported to out of state events, sanctioned by the U.S. All-Star Federation and Varsity Spirit, while ignoring calls for a comprehensive internal investigation despite what it calls a "growing scandal" gaining national prominence."
The lawsuit further contends that incidents of criminal abuse were reported to the Greenville County Sheriff's Office. But a response from the Sheriff's Office last night reads: "GCSO has not received any complaint about Scott Foster or sexual abuse occurring at Rock Star Cheer. The only matter we investigated was his death." Foster, the company's founder, shot himself days before the case went public.
The Sheriff's statement says the Department of Homeland Security is the investigating agency at this point, and adds-- again quoting -- "if a complaint of that nature was brought to our attention, and occurred within our jurisdiction, we would be conducting an extensive, thorough and timely investigation.”
