Gubernatorial Candidate calling for SC to suspend gas tax

On the heels of North Carolina lawmakers approving a temporary suspension of the state gas tax, South Carolina Attorney General and Republican Gubernatorial Nominee Alan Wilson, is once again calling for South Carolina to follow suit.

During Wednesday’s special session, the North Carolina General Assembly approved a bill suspending the state’s gas tax through November 30th. The measure passed the House and Senate and is expected to be signed by Governor Josh Stein, Friday.



On Thursday ,Wilson released a statement saying South Carolina could use its rainy day fund to “backfill the lost gas tax revenue,” providing relief at the pump without taking money away from roads and infrastructure. Wilson has proposed suspending the state's gas tax for 120 days since March.

In mid-September, Governor Henry McMaster dismissed calls to suspend South Carolina's gas tax.
Late last month, Georgia Governor Brian Kemp suspended the state’s gas tax for 38 days, from September 29th through November 5th.
