Inmate dies following fire at South Carolina State Prison

An inmate is dead following a fire at a state prison in the Low Country. The South Carolina Department of Corrections says 33 year old David Viron Garrett died Friday night at Lieber Correctional in Dorchester County.

Officials report that a small fire broke out in Garrett's cell, they have not released details on how the fire started. Garrett was the lone occupant in the cell, he was serving time on charges of murder, armed robbery and burglary following in an incident in Spartanburg County.

Garrett was expected to be behind bars for at least the next 25 years. An autopsy is set to be performed to reveal more about his death, which is under investigation by The Dept. Of Corrections, SLED and The Dorchester County Coroner's Office.
