In Atlanta, an autopsy is scheduled on a 66 year old man found dead at the Fulton County jail. It's already under federal investigation over the number of inmates who have died there.
Jailers found Alexander Hawkins unresponsive in the medical unit Thursday morning. He was pronounced dead a short while later, the sixth prisoner to die this year in the Fulton County lockup.
He had been transferred from the city jail on August 5th when he couldn't secure the five thousand dollar bond set by a municipal judge on a shoplifting charge.
The Department of Justice opened its investigation into the conditions of the jail, citing Lashawn Thompson’s death last September as one of dozens during the past few years.
Thompson, 35 years old, died in a bedbug-infested cell in the jail’s psychiatric wing. The county reached a settlement with his family earlier this month.
