Greenville County investigators now say, the man whose body was recovered from Lake Cunningham Sunday afternoon had jumped in and started to swim away when Sheriff's Deputies arrived to serve an arrest warrant.
Deputies say, the warrant for failure to appear in court was not for the arrest of 38-year-old Chuck Gilbert Shelton, Jr. , and had nothing to do with him at all. There's no indication of why he was trying to get away from the house on River Road just outside the Greer City limits.
Boaters who saw him jump in told deputies he started calling for help about halfway across the 350-acre lake. The deputies who had arrived with the warrant also went in trying to rescue Shelton, but he had disappeared. That was around 3 PM.
A sheriff's Office dive team recovered his body about an hour later. The coroner has ruled it an accidental drowning but will perform an autopsy because of the circumstances.
