A hospital patient accused of leading law enforcement on a two-county chase in a stolen ambulance is in custody and facing charges, including attempted murder.
Deputies say 34 year old Terrance Trent Darby of Anderson managed to hijack the ambulance shortly after noon Thursday at Spartanburg Medical Center's Mary Black Hospital where he was a patient.
The ambulance collided with a Spartanburg Police cruiser on East John and South Pine Streets downtown, then sped away on highway 176 across the Union County line. It clipped a deputy's car during the chase there before stop-sticks brought it to a halt on Sims Drive.
Darby was captured without further incident. There's no word on why he had fled, and Spartanburg Regional Health isn't saying how he managed to swipe the ambulance.
Darby is awaiting arraignment on charges including reckless driving, failure to stop for blue lights, endangerment of a highway worker and attempted murder.
The Union County Sheriff says he deliberately rammed his deputy's car during the chase
