Severe storms do damage in areas of the Upstate

Storm damage in Spartanburg County

National Weather Service specialists are surveying Monday's storm damage in parts of the Upstate, some of it suspected to be the aftermath of tornado touchdowns.

A funnel cloud was spotted looming over the Berea area in west Greenville County. There were also a dozen downed power and phone cables in Spartanburg County. Those poles had been practically uprooted and could've been the work of a twister on the ground, or the powerful windgusts of cold air from tall thunderstorms.

The so-called microbursts are capable of the kind of localized damage similar to tornado touchdowns. The area around Parris Bridge Road in Boiling Springs and an area near Chesnee where weather service radar spotted a tornado signature will get a closer look.

The collapse of some lightweight aluminum-paneled sheds in the vicinity looked more like straight wind damage. Fortunately no storm-related injuries have been reported and emergency crews expect to have most of the power back on later today.
