An inmate at the Buncombe County Detention Facility has died from what has been described as an "unknown medical condition".

The Sheriff's Office says inmate Gray Hester was experiencing medical distress during a routine cell inspection Saturday night.

He was found unresponsive around 8pm. The detention medical team performed life-savings measures until EMS arrived, but Hester did not survive. He was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Hester was booked into the Facility on January 8th.  According to the Sheriff's Office, he was awaiting trial on state charges, after which he was scheduled to return to federal custody.

The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation will formally investigate Hester's death,  which is standard procedure in such cases.
