A State Senator is stepping down after major announcement. Nearly one year into his term, South Carolina State Senator Roger Nutt has announced he will step down after being diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease.

The 59 year old made the announcement Monday, stating in a letter that he had initially sought medical attention for what he believed were long COVID symptoms, only to receive the devastating diagnosis of the progressive cognitive disease.

Nutt represents District 12, which includes portions of Spartanburg and Greenville counties.

In June of last year, Nutt won a primary runoff against Lee Bright for the State Senate seat in Spartanburg County, ultimately winning the seat. Prior to his time in the Senate, he served in the State House from 2021 to 2024.
