Teenage suspect in custody after shooting at WNC festival

Two Juveniles were hospitalized and a teenage suspect is in custody after a weekend shooting at festival in Western North Carolina. Officers from the Asheville Police Department responded to a report of shots fired at the Juneteenth Festival downtown just before 9 PM, Saturday night.

Upon arrival, officers found two juvenile victims suffering from gunshot wounds. Both victims were taken to Mission Hospital, one was released and the other was said to be in critical but stable condition, as of Sunday afternoon.

A 16 year old was identified as the suspect and was arrested and charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill. A 9mm pistol and other psychical evidence was recovered from near the scene.

The suspect has not been identified due to being a juvenile. The shooting shut down the Asheville Juneteenth Festival and led to the cancellation of the 2nd day of the celebration.
