Senator Thomas Alexander of Walhalla was elected today by his fellow senators to serve as President of the South Carolina Senate. Senator Alexander succeeds Senator Harvey Peeler, who is now Chairman of the Senate Finance Committee. The Senate President is a member of the Senate who is elected by senators to serve as the presiding officer of the body.

Alexander was elected to the South Carolina Senate on October 11, 1994, in a special election. He chaired the Senate Labor, Commerce and Industry Committee for almost ten years.
He serves on the Finance Committee; Labor, Commerce and Industry Committee; Medical Affairs Committee; Banking and Insurance Committee; Joint Bond Review Committee; and chairs the Public Utility Review Committee.


“It is one of the greatest honors of my life to be elected by my colleagues to serve as President of the South Carolina Senate. I am indebted by the support I have received from my family and constituents back home in Oconee and Pickens. I appreciate the opportunity, honor and privilege to serve.” said Senator Alexander .
