Cherokee County Coroner Dennis Fowler says a Gaffney woman was killed in a two-vehicle crash on South Carolina Highway 18 north Thursday evening, just outside of Blacksburg. Fowler identified the victim as Betty Ann Lipscomb, 46, of 823 8th Street.
“Lipscomb was driver of a 2007 Saturn that was headed south on S.C. 18 at 6:20 p.m. She drove off the right side of the road onto the shoulder before overcorrecting and coming back onto the pavement. Her vehicle crossed the center line and was T-boned in the passenger’s side by a 2010 Hyundai headed north.
Lipscomb was pronounced dead at the scene. Her 2 month old grandson, who was a passenger in the vehicle, was transported to a Charlotte hospital for treatment. The other driver was transported to a hospital in Shelby, NC Fowler said.
“Family members say Lipscomb had left a nearby residence just minutes before the crash and the infant was secured in a child safety seat when she left. The baby was out of the car seat when emergency personnel arrived on the scene indicating Lipscomb could have turned her focus to the child when the collision occurred,” Fowler said.
An autopsy has been scheduled for Friday to assist with the investigation of the fatal crash. Lipscomb became Cherokee County’s 21st traffic related death of 2021.
