Upstate man gets two life sentences after kidnapping in 2024

59 year old, Darrell Scott Brooks of Walhalla

Oconee County Detention Center

An Oconee County man will spend the rest of his life behind bars after kidnapping and trying to rape a Clemson student in 2024 . 10th Circuit Solicitor Micah Black says 59 year old, Darrell Scott Brooks has been convicted on charges of kidnapping, assault, intent of criminal sexual conduct and grand larceny.

The charges came after an incident in which Brooks lied to a Clemson student and told her he was an employee of the university and his car had broken down. The victim let Brooks in her vehicle and told her to drive to Fants Grove Baptist Church. When they got there, Brooks told the victim to follow him inside, she refused and he punched and cut her with a boxcutter.

A passer-by then pulled into the parking lot and helped the victim escape. Brooks took off in the victim's vehicle, he was later spotted in Oconee County and led deputies on a chase. The pursuit ended with Brooks crashing on Highway 76 near the Georgia State Line.

Officials say, Brooks had previously served time for kidnapping and criminal sexual conduct. He had only been out of prison four months when the incident occurred in 2024. Brooks received two consecutive life sentences.
