A park in Oconee County will soon bear the name of a former football star from the Upstate. Officials in Seneca have decided to name a park there in honor of the late great Bennie Cunningham. The move was proposed last week by the Seneca City Council.
Cunningham was a Seneca native, who starred at Seneca High before going on to become an All-American at Clemson. He was then drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers, where he spent 10 seasons and helped them win two Super Bowls.
Cunningham later became a guidance counselor at West Oak High School in Oconee County. The park that sits on the former Kellett Elementary School site in Seneca will be named Bennie Cunningham park to pay tribute to his legacy.
