The Asheville Police Department says multiple officers were assaulted during the arrest of a wanted suspect over the weekend. On Sunday officers made a traffic stop. During the stop, officers identified one of the people in the vehicle as 26 year old, Xavier Jerome Avery who was wanted for assault.
Police say while Avery was being apprehended he assaulted at least three officers and injured one. During a subsequent search Avery was found with fentanyl, crack and a stolen gun.
He's charged with three counts of assaulting an officer, two counts of possession with intent to distribute, multiple weapons violations, resisting arrest and multiple other charges.
Avery was then booked into the Buncombe County Jail. Police have not given any update on the injured officer's condition, as of the time of this report.
