Pipeline update: Panic buying at the pump

By , NewsRadio 1080 KRLD

Despite calls for calm from AAA and other officials, the frenzied run on gas stations continued early Wednesday in the southeastern U.S. and up the East Coast.

As the operators of the Colonial Pipeline work to restore the system after last week's cyberattack, many drivers have jumped into panic mode, rushing to find available gasoline and top off their tanks, creating widespread shortages.

According to Gas Buddy Head of Petroleum Analysis Patrick DeHaan, more than 70% of stations in metro Charlotte, N.C., had run out as of Wednesday morning.  The number in Atlanta exceeded 60%.

CBS News Correspondent Jim Krasula told the KRLD Morning News a station in Richmond, Va., had a posted price of $6.99 a gallon.

DeHaan said there is ample supply of fuel to restock outlets in the affected areas, but a shortage of tanker truck drivers is adding another layer to an already difficult situation.
