On Saturday, December 19, Stella tweeted, “If a little Hillbilly singer like my big sister Dolly can invest in the vaccine then why the hell can’t some of you old moldy politicians pitch in a few million yourselves?” Parton called specific attention to Dolly’s million-dollar donation to help get the Moderna vaccine off the ground.
Over the weekend the tweet exploded, with over 388,000 likes and 61,000 retweets. Stella’s tweets fall in line with the congressional timeline to pass new COVID-19 stimulus legislation. As the virus has continued to surge, businesses struggle to stay afloat, people across the country grapple with the devastation of unemployment, and the country is in the midst of some of the worst months of the nearly 10-month long pandemic, Congress has just finally agreed on the second round of stimulus legislation. The first piece of relief legislation was passed in late spring of 2020.

Parton also pointedly tweets at politicians, “I noticed you started getting vaccinated right away while people are starving and dying you Aholes.”
Many politicians have publicly received vaccinations in order to quell fears about the new vaccines and increase public trust. Politicians have also been able to receive the new vaccine under the Continuity of Government plan, which allows the U.S. government to take necessary measures to continue governance in the case of a catastrophic event.
