The Coldplay frontman was a guest on comedian Pete HolmesYou Made It Weird podcast and recalled his experience on mushrooms after being asked if he’d ever taken psychedelics.

“Only once, on mushrooms,” Martin said. “I loved it, and that was good… it sort of confirmed my suspicions about the universe. I was like, ‘Okay, yep, that seems to be true.’”

Martin added that he’s not a big fan of using drugs or alcohol with music. “Some people, it enhances it. For me, it doesn’t,” he said.

“I felt like, after I did mushrooms once, that [was] really the confirmation I needed of how I feel about the universe, so I don’t need to do that again… but I think, for other people, it’s just amazing what it does.”

Coldplay is set to return with their ninth studio album when Music of the Spheres is released on October 15.

Martin shared news of the album in a handwritten note to fans on the band’s Instagram account. Music of the Spheres will feature twelve brand new songs from Coldplay, five of which are represented by emojis.
