The War On Drugs frontman joined Audacy’s Megan Holiday for an extensive conversation as he took us inside the remix of The Rolling Stones song “Scarlet,” which was released as part of the Goats Head Soup reissue in 2020.

First things first… What was it like conversing with Mick Jagger? “The whole thing was surreal,” Granduciel said. When he was first asked to do it, Granduciel thought it was just some inter-label conversation that was being done for promotion. “Maybe that was naive on my part,” he admitted. After working on it for a few months and submitting the song, he got the answer every musician wants to hear, “Mick loved it.”

“When we chatted, it was just amazing,” he added. “It’s the same thing when you watch that Beatles movie, these guys are in pursuit of the song and the sound their whole life.”

“It was so inspiring,” Granduciel recalled.

The War On Drugs had their first proper set since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic when they performed at the California festival Desert Daze back in November. Granduciel said the band had about a week of rehearsals under their belt and did a full 80-minute set rehearsal. “We were wiped out after we rehearsed it!” He exclaimed.

Having to get back in touring shape is a very real thing, especially when you’ve been away from the stage for so long. “We forget that when you’re on tour every day for a year or two years and then you take a year off and do it again, it hits you,” Granduciel said. “When you take off three years, those 80 minutes are an intense 80 minutes.”
