They say a picture is worth a thousand words, but apparently humans aren’t the best at deciphering those words, even when it comes to selfies. A recent study done in Russia revealed artificial intelligence is able to infer one’s personality based on selfies better than humans. According to the study it is easier to predict personality from a female’s face than a male’s.

Published in the journal Scientific Reports, the study done by researchers at HSE University and Open University in Russia used AI technology personality judgments based on photographs. They believe this technology can be used to find the “best matches” in customer service, dating or online tutoring. The study shows humans had more inconsistencies when trying to determine one’s personality traits based on selfies.

In order to collect data, researchers collected a sample of 12,000 volunteers, who completed a self-report questionnaire measuring personality traits, and uploaded a total of 31,000 selfies in order to complete the results. The results showed that the technology better determined conscientiousness, neuroticism, extraversion, agreeableness, and openness. Hopefully AI doesn’t take over social media, or else some selfies are about to get called out.
