People often wonder what they would do if they ever became a billionaire. For many they already have a particular purchase in mind, while others wouldn't know where to begin spending the money. Luckily, current billionaire Jeff Bezos can lend some inspiration, as he is currently spending $42 million to build a clock that will tell time for 10,000 years.
Jeff Bezos is currently funding a project to build the "Clock of the Long Now," the brainchild of his friend Danny Hillis, a computer scientist and entrepreneur. The clock is so large; it is being built inside a West Texas mountain. It will be 500 feet tall, "all mechanical, powered by day/night thermal cycles," and "synchronized at solar noon," according to Bezos.
Hillis and Bezos first started making plans for the clock in 2005, and began installation in 2018. Bezos explained the idea "as a way to remind people that the far future not only exists but will happen to their descendants." While the clock won't be completed for years, it will remain telling time for many years after Bezos is gone.
